It is interesting to look at the data as this was a longer time period due to Easter and the re-jigging of garbage pick up. This collection period was 9 days long so although we were all working hard to reduce the numbers may not be a total reflection as it included a few more days of consumption.
Our family jumped into the Green Cone waste with both feet and managed to keep another 8 pounds of garbage out of the waste stream. We cancelled our daily newspaper subscription to the Vancouver Sun but that only kicked in on Wednesday so this weeks newsprint did not reflect a reduction – next week will be better.
When we put all our ‘stuff’ out on the curb this morn we reflected on still how much plastic and paper we recycle. We will have to work harder at trying to figure out how to reduce that. With two kids under the age of 5 that is going to be an interesting challenge with crafts, school projects, toilet paper rolls, etc, etc.
Our neighbours beside us, Frank and Sui-Hui are the real inspirations for us. The are already living very closely to Zero Waste but managed to reduce their footprint even more dramatically this past 9 days. The picture at top is the waste they generated this past week. 70 grams! That is it! 4 grams a day per person – now that is an inspiration that the world should be living up to.
So onward and upward we go with our one green cone installed, our energy high and enthusiasm to reduce firmly in place.
Wish us luck and please send us your encouragements!
